Year after year, more babies are born at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission than anywhere else in the Kansas City area. Throughout Johnson County, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is known as a wonderful place to become a mom. But did you know that AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is also a great place to work as a mom? Here are seven reasons why.

1. Award-winning Support for Breastfeeding

More than 80% of mothers in Kansas are choosing to breastfeed, but most of us stop sooner than we planned. Going back to work is a barrier to continued breastfeeding for many moms, but AdventHealth Shawnee Mission wants to be a part of the solution! Our commitment to breastfeeding extends beyond support for our patients. As a Gold Level Support for Nursing Mothers award recipient, we offer a wealth of resources to help team members meet their breastfeeding goals. These include access to skilled lactation care through the Outpatient Breastfeeding Clinic, Breastfeeding Support Group and our Breastfeeding Warmline.

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission also offers high-quality hospital-grade breast pumps for employee use in our lactation lounge, and easy access to pump parts in a pinch at our Mommy & Me Boutique. (Hooray for not having to lug your pump to and from work!) And nothing beats running over to the Early Learning Center to nurse your little one over your lunch break. Which brings us to…

2. Safe On-site Childcare

Going back to work after having a baby isn’t easy, but the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Early Learning Center makes it a lot easier! The center is operated as an exclusive benefit for employees and active medical staff, offering a faith-based, loving environment for children six weeks to 12 years. With flexible hours and the ability to register for regular or week-to-week schedules, the ELC is the perfect childcare option. And the summer camps are fabulous. I could tell you many stories we hear from staff whose little ones don’t want to go home at pick-up time!

3. Great Health Benefits for Growing Families

Rising insurance premiums in recent years have made affordable health insurance options a challenge for growing families. AdventHealth Shawnee Mission offers competitive rates and options for coveragefrom a traditional plan with a lower deductible, to a health savings account plan that allows associates with fewer health care needs to save money through reduced monthly premiums.

Our associate wellness program also provides fun opportunities to participate in department health challenges, classes, health screenings and other activities. Having a fitness center and a pharmacy right on campus leaves no excuse to not put your health needs first!

4. Flexible Scheduling Options

With various levels of part-time and per diem (PRN) positions available, moms at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission can work the number of hours that work for their family. Many units participate in “self-scheduling” where associates can choose which days they’d like to work. Other units offer the consistency of a rotating schedule. Either way, we do a LOT of trading of shifts so we can be there for our son's baseball tournament, our sister’s baby shower, or for parent-teacher conferences.

5. Fun Activities for the Whole Family

Do your kids love to come to “mommy’s work” as much as mine? AdventHealth Shawnee Mission encourages team members to bring their families to fun events like the Strawberry Festival held each June at our three campuses. There's something for everyone at these special get-togethers, like chair massages for grown-ups, bounce houses and games for children, and strawberry shortcake and ice cream for all! Events like these also provide a fun way to get to know your co-workers and their families. It's such a joy to see how much everyone’s kids grow year after year!

6. Healthy Meal Options at Work

I don’t know about you, but sometimes just getting out the door in the morning feels like an accomplishment! By the time you’ve got everyone dressed, packed up and to the bus stop, a healthy breakfast or lunch for yourself is the last thing on your mind. But no one should start the work day with a grumbly tummy! Enter the beautiful and newly renovated Harvest Kitchen with fabulous breakfast offerings, gourmet salads, rotating international offerings, a comfort food station, grab-and-go options, pizza, soups and a grill for burgers and more. The Harvest Kitchen also makes for a great place to grab a bite after work with your family.

You’ll love the Harvest Kitchen’s contemporary, yet casual restaurant feel. It also includes a Mother Earth Coffee shop. Employees receive a small discount on meals, and for convenience, you can easily swipe your badge to have the cost deducted directly from your paycheck.

7. Amazingly Supportive Coworkers!

Last but not least, our team members LOVE their AdventHealth Shawnee Mission family. We’re forever planning potlucks, baby showers, retirement parties or celebrating our collective successes as a team. We work hard to provide the best for our patients and have a blast doing it. Whether it’s a fellow colleague holding your pager while you pump, a friend whose able to trade your holiday shift, or just a smile and a “good morning” in the hallway, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission offers a culture of teamwork, support and friendship.
